make it rainDo you have a favorite hobby? An obsession? Some passion that fills every spare moment?

Most people I know have hobbies like this. And I’m always sad to hear them say things like, “If I could make a living just [insert hobby here] . . .”

What if you could?

What if you could make a living doing that thing you love?

It may seem like a simplistic, maybe even hackneyed idea, and if you stay on the surface, it also doesn’t seem too plausible. Make a living collecting stamps? Reading romance novels? Curating cat pics on Facebook? Even the passions with more obvious career connections — writing, design, music, for example — are intimidating to attempt.

But this is 2014! Everyone deserves to do work they love and be loved for the work they do. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) You shouldn’t be trapped in a job you hate just because the world hasn’t drawn a clear path between your passion and some kind of profit.

If you dig deeper and get your hands a little dirty, you’ll discover a lot of gold buried beneath the surface of any of your weird interests. When you’re as obsessed with something as so many people are with their hobbies and interests, you probably have a wealth of knowledge on the topic that someone else would find valuable — if you know how to package it right.
