In a very difficult job market, the only way to come out ahead in your job search is to make sure you stay positive and learn to overcome any setbacks.
The people you surround yourself with will make a huge difference, not only in helping you find potential job leads, but also keeping you in the right mindset. You should avoid negative people at all costs. Here are six reasons why.
You Need to Stay Upbeat
Throughout your job search, you need to stay upbeat even when you don’t get the job right away. Employers want to see that you want to work for them. This means that everything you do needs to show enthusiasm — from your cover letter to each round of interviews to your subsequent follow-up
If you let negative people into your head, your ability to come across as an eager, positive person will be diminished, whether you realize it or not. If you’re not selected for a particular job that you really wanted, don’t let it discourage you. Do essential follow-up, thanking the potential employer for their consideration, and stay upbeat for the next interview opportunity.
You Have to Keep Selling Yourself
A job search is all about selling yourself. To do this, you need more than just positive thoughts. You need to believe you are the best for the job and understand all the reasons why you’re the best. Surrounding yourself with negative people can make you all too aware of all your weaknesses.
While constructive criticism can definitely help you prepare for your job search, you don’t want to be around people who are pointing out everything that’s wrong with you while you’re trying to showcase everything that’s great about you.
You Need to Be Willing to Take Chances
The number of people who never get turned down during a job search is next to zero. You need to be willing to submit an application or reach out to potential employers while knowing that you might hear “no” in response. If you stay optimistic and keep believing in yourself, this won’t be a problem. However, if you listen to the negative people, you’ll keep hearing how you’re unqualified and never have a chance. Tune them out and try anyway — your other experiences might still make you the perfect candidate for the job.
You Have to Be Able to Depend on Others
A job search may be all about selling yourself, but you can’t do it alone. Whether you have a networking contact that’s promised to try to get you an interview, are waiting for a recommendation or just need encouragement from a loved one, you’re going to need the help of others many times during your job search.
Most of the time, you’ll be happy to have this help. The trouble comes when you hear negative things from one person and assume everyone else will be negative — just stay away from the negative person.
You Need to Keep Having Fun
Job searches can take weeks, months, even years. You need to find ways to escape, or you’ll quickly burn out. Keep living your everyday life and, above all else, have fun. If you let pessimistic people fill your head with negative thoughts, you’ll spend all of your down time thinking these negative thoughts. Instead of recharging, you’ll only bring yourself down.
You Have to Be Confident You’ll Succeed
The only way to have success in a job search is to believe that it will lead to success. (Tweet this thought.) This is how you’ll be able to stay in a good frame of mind while you keep promoting yourself to people who may turn you down.
If you keep telling yourself, “I can do this,” you’ll be able to do it. If you hear that from other people, you’ll believe it even more. The number one thing to remember is: don’t get discouraged. Just stay away from the people who only want to tell you what you can’t do.
