Practice Safe Searches: Protecting Your Personal Information During Your Job Hunt

Interview, Job Search

Many potential employers require you to submit a resume into an online pool. We’ve gotten very comfortable with sharing personal information online — think social media, online shopping and so on. Despite this, we’re starting to take notice of the potential risks.

These same risks exist when you apply for jobs online. When you fill out an application and submit a resume on the Internet, your personal information runs the risk of getting into the wrong hands.

There are ways to keep your personal information safe while you job-hunt. Just like you sign on to secure networks and keep your passwords private, use these tips to protect your personal information as you search for jobs online:

1. Don’t Upload a Resume If You Can’t Delete It

Before you upload a resume, check the instructions on the application. Do they mention steps you can take to delete any uploaded document? If so, feel free to upload your resume, cover letter and any other pertinent documents.

However, if you don’t see those instructions, email the site for their deletion policy. If their response contains no deletion instructions, or if you don’t wish to share your information with them in order to pursue this job, do not post your resume.

2. Review the Site’s Privacy Policy

Even if you are able to delete your resume, you want to make sure that resume is for their eyes only. Read over the site’s privacy policy. If the site doesn’t specifically state that the company won’t share your name, address and other personal data from your resume and application, don’t fill out the application.

If you use a resume writing service, ask to see the site’s privacy policy about how the company stores and manages your resume.

3. Create a List of References, But Don’t Include It With Your Resume

The online application might include a way to upload a list of references. Don’t upload it along with your resume and cover letter. You should contact each potential reference before you add them to your reference list. If they’re willing to recommend you to a potential employer, ask for their address, phone number and email address.

Instead of uploading your reference list with the application, wait and take a copy with you to the interview. This way, your references’ personal information won’t be shared online and your potential employer still has a way to contact them.

4. Use a Secure Home Network to Apply for Jobs Online

It’s safer to use a secure home network with your own personal IP address whenever you go online to shop, check social media or chat with friends and family. However, it’s even more important when you apply for jobs. You need to share a good amount of personal data when you apply for jobs.

So sign off of your coffee shop’s Wi-Fi and head home if you find an appealing job offer. Use a home network that is password-protected, or block your IP address so hackers can’t track your online activity.

Practice Job Searching the Safe Way

Use discretion when you apply for any job. Research a company heavily before you agree to meet for an in-person interview. If possible, look for job reviews online to make sure the company is a legitimate enterprise that treats its employees well before you apply.

Happy job-hunting!
